What is a Gravel Bike?

Gravel bikes, also known as adventure bikes or all-road bikes, are a versatile breed of bicycles designed to handle a wide range of terrains. These bikes originated from the growing popularity of gravel grinding, a type of cycling that combines elements of road cycling and mountain biking. Gravel grinding involves riding on unpaved roads, gravel trails, and even singletrack, giving riders the freedom to explore beyond the confines of traditional road cycling.
One of the key features of gravel bikes is their wider tires. Unlike traditional road bikes with narrow tires, gravel bikes typically sport wider tyres, ranging from 35mm to 45mm. The increased tire width provides better traction and stability on loose surfaces, making it easier to navigate rough terrain. Additionally, the wider tires absorb more vibrations, offering a smoother and more comfortable ride, especially on long-distance journeys. Gravel bikes also feature a more relaxed geometry compared to road racing bikes, known as endurance geometry, which prioritizes comfort over aerodynamics. This allows riders to maintain a more upright position, reducing strain on the wrists, neck, and lower back during extended rides.
Another distinguishing feature of gravel bikes is the inclusion of disc brakes. While disc brakes have been prevalent in mountain biking for years, they have only recently gained traction in the road cycling world. The advent of disc brakes on gravel bikes provides riders with enhanced stopping power, especially in wet or muddy conditions. This added control and confidence inspire riders to tackle more challenging terrain, knowing they can rely on their brakes to bring them to a safe stop. With these features in mind, it's easy to see why gravel bikes have become the ultimate all-rounders for cyclists looking to venture beyond the beaten path.
